Smart City Teaching Resources

Course Introduction

The smart city course is used to teach smart cities and Internet of Things (IoT) to students. The target students are from Primary 4 to Secondary 6. After completing this course, student are able to gain a deeper understanding of smart cities and IoT and programming skills. There are 3 levels for different students:

  • Primary Level-10.5 hours (16 lessons)
  • Secondary Level-13.5 hours (20 lessons)
  • Comprehensive Level-21.5 hours (20 lessons)

Course Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of smart cities and their elements.
  2. Comprehend the basics of the Internet of Things and its various applications.
  3. Develop an increased proficiency in the micro:bit coding.
  4. Understand the IoT communication technology through ThingSpeak, IFTTT, App Control, Cloud Control and even O2O communication.

Course Overview

  • In total, there are 5 units. The Units are as follows: Smart City I, Smart City II, Internet of Things I, Group Project, Presentation.
  • There is 1 Advanced Unit + 2 Optional Units.
  • The Courseware will include complete and detailed (i) Course outline,  (ii) teacher notes and (iii) lesson plans for each lesson, and (iv) labsheets for software set up and case building tutorials.
  • The Final Assignment of the students will involve them combining several projects that they have built into one big city.

Unit 1. Smart City IIntroduction to the concept of a Smart City. Get Started to build a Smart Playground Lamp on a city map.s
Unit 2. Smart City II“Effects of car parking and waste management on a city.
Practical work on Smart Car Park and Garbage Disposal System.”
Unit 3. Internet of Things IIntroduction to IoT, Thingspeak and IFTTT. Practical work on Smart Weather Station and Smart Defense System to upload data and trigger email alert.
Unit 4. Group ProjectStudents complete their projects under teacher supervision.
Unit 5. Final PresentationStudents present their project
Advanced Unit: Internet of Things IIIntroduction to App Inventor 2 and Cloud Control. Practical Work on smart house door control and smart streetlight.
Optional Unit Smart City IIIPractical work on urban noise detection and car speed monitoring system.
Optional Unit Internet of Things IIIIntroduction to Object-to-Object communication and practical work on smart traffic lights as well as roof garden clothes rack (cloud control).

For Teachers

Teacher Notes
In teacher notes, extra information on smart city case applications is provided for teaching which can give students understanding of smart city and IoT. Videos of real-life examples are included to show students how technology works in daily life. 
Lesson Plan
The lesson plan in each unit states the overall teaching flow, activities and materials needed. Teachers can take as references to plan their lessons. They can also adjust their lesson content on their own.
Grading Sheets
Designed Grading sheets are provided to assess students’ performance effectively. Different criteria are listed for assessment reference. For secondary level, peer evaluation sheets are added.
Course Outline
The course outline includes lesson plans for the teacher. Apart from core units, we also suggest advanced units and optional units, helping teachers to plan lessons according to their needs.
Course Guide
The course guide introduces the content of each document. It also suggests teaching flow as a reference and explains the curriculum differences between levels 

For Students

Student Notes
The lab sheets list the detailed assembly steps and clear programming instructions for students to build up the case scenarios. In the end of the lab sheets, there are questions to help students summarize the knowledge they have learnt in the smart city cases. In the group project assignment, project guidelines with grading rubrics are given to students finishing the project.  
Appendix
Extra information on IoT related applications are introduced which teaches students using those applications.
Worksheet
The worksheets help students brainstorm and discuss their dream smart city.
